Diane Visten, and Bruce Boyer, WSSRA Legislative Committee members on one of their visits to Legislators this past winter, promoting and protecting our pension benefits. Neither rain, snow nor winds will stop us on delivering our message to our legislators!! Liz Jennings of Community Action of Skagit County, who came to our April General meeting. School Retiree' Week March 13 - 19
Governor Ensley urged all people to join him in the special observance of School Retiree's Appreciation Week March 13th -19th. He sited WSSRA retirees as supporting all retirees in the special challenges that retirement brings.  Noting that WSSRA members aids in the advancement of high educational standards, and promote group and individual charitable activities by sponsoring scholarships and grants.  He stated that WSSRA members support to remain active in the educational profession through volunteer activities associated with learning.  Mount Vernon School District honored retirees at the March 15th board meeting held at Washington School.  Retiree's from several districts were proud of their experience and years of dedicated service.
Lonnie Keown, Unit 21 member attending the United Way Kickoff Breakfast with Boy Scout Representative taking the challenge that reminds us that children need readiness activities before attending school. Our unit was looking into how we can be better known and more useful in our community. Joyce Moon, and Barbara Robinson are registering new voters at Skagit Valley College on September 22, 2015 on National Voter Registration Day. Kathy Reim also spent the day registering new voters but is not in the picture. The Unit 21 board, at a business meeting, enjoying a potluck lunch, at Lonnie Keown's home, Monday November 2, 2015. Next on the menu was the collating of flyers for the Holiday lunch coming up in December 2015. Mary Henderson-Jones, Diane Visten, Joyce Moon, and Barbara Robinson are serving over 100 people at the Candidate Forum held on September 21, 2015. Our Skagit Island San Juan Unit 21 School Retirees partnered with the League of Women Voters to host the mayoral candidates for Mount Vernon and for Sedro Woolley, and candidates for positions for the Skagit Port and the Anacortes Port Commissions.

We had a NW 1 Coordinating Council meeting of Sno-Isle, Sno-King, Whatcom and Skagit Island San Juan units on March 2nd. These are pictures from this meeting.

WE had treats, and letters detailing our retiree concerns in our bags plus information about our goals as school retirees.

Diane Visten and Judy Allen are serving at the end of the year barbeque at Clear Lake School. Peggy Suryan, Chris Sargo, Barbara Robinson, and Kelly Cargile, secretary to the Sedro Woolley School District Superintendent enjoyed visiting with past students and past teaching friends. Judy Allen, retired teacher from Clear Lake School with assistance from Anna Wright, teacher at Clear Lake School and past student of Mrs. Allen, serving students at the Clear Lake end of the year barbeque. Members of Skagit Island San Juan Unit 21 Retirees attended an event hosted by the Whatcom retirees unit. At this event to raise funds for mini grants, we were honored to hear from holocaust survivor, Noemi Ban. We also got to hear from one of Whatcom's past year recipients of the mini grant program. She told the audience of how the mini grants impact her students school experiences. Eight members of the SISJ Unit 21 attended the June convention in Vancouver, WA. Barbara Robinson, Diane Visten, Reidar and Millie Ytgard,Joyce Moon, Joyce Scoll, Harriet Smith and Joanne Jones voted on business issues, elected new officers and gained knowledge on health, legislation, retirement and membership issues.
August Wine Event
Ken and Donna Howard, Eloise Stendal and Barbara Landrock enjoy fine wine, cool shade and visit with many friends at the Tulip Valley Vineyard and Orchard August Wine event hosted by the members of Skagit Island San Juan Unit 21. Kelly Visten Bohon and Jeff Bradley entertained the guests at the Tulip Valley Vineyard and Orchard event in August. Guests so enjoyed their talents that they were brought back from last years wine event by popular demand. Sharon Sackett and Diane Lavoy, active members visit with Diane Visten and Alice Fitzgerald retired members at the August wine event. Tom Andre, past mini grant recipient with is partner, Jan Johnson, brand new member, with her partner enjoy sunshine and shade at the August wine event.
